Greenwood County and WCFIBER Provide Broadband Expansion Update

Greenwood, S.C. –WC FIBER, LLC (WCFIBER), a subsidiary of West Carolina Telephone Cooperative, announced that they are ahead of schedule in their commitment to expand their fiber network in Greenwood County. By the end of May 2022, they expect to bring service to more than 940 addresses – approximately 460 more than was initially planned for this year.

“We are pleased to hear these encouraging updates regarding the expansion of broadband accessibility for the residents of our county,” Chuck Moates, Greenwood County Council chairman, said. “Broadband is an essential requirement for modern life and being able to provide this service to citizens who have not previously had access makes me very proud.”

“The work of WCFIBER is providing Greenwood with incredible opportunities,” Julie Wilkie, City of Greenwood manager, said. “Having reliable connectivity is more important than ever for work, school, healthcare and overall quality of life. We are extremely grateful to our partners at the County for recognizing the importance of broadband expansion and taking the necessary steps to ensure Greenwood citizens have reliable, necessary and affordable access.”

In addition to broadband access, WCFIBER also provides eligible households with discounts on broadband service through the Affordable Connectivity Program. They are also planning on hosting free computer literacy classes for the public and are working with the Veterans Health Administration to offer local sites where veterans can access telemedicine care in the future.

WCFIBER, together with Greenwood County Council, has been working to make high-speed internet available to more Greenwood County residents. In December 2021, they announced a $19 million investment and expansion of services in various parts of the county, including areas in and around the city of Greenwood, that would bring broadband service to an additional 2,400 addresses.
