Now Reading
Writing is what we do.

Writing is what we do.

Usually I write after doing the appropriate research, so I can present the facts along with my interpretation and carefully considered opinion. This post is just different. I have no master plan. I don’t even know how I’m going to end. But I do have a message. And the message is that: Writing just makes me feel better. My guess is that many of you feel the same way.

We write for different reasons. We write in different genres. We write for different readers, but we all write. We write for work, for school, for family, for friends, for community. We write to persuade, to inform, to comment, to motivate, to inspire, to comfort. We write news, features,  journals entries, essays, research papers, poetry, and letters. We write to like-minded readers, hostite readers, acquaintances, and strangers.

But we write. We write to make a difference.  The paper is our microphone. The pen is our mouth, and the ink is our blood. The words are our thoughts and feelings. It is a vulnerable proposition -writing, but we are writers. It is what we do.

When something is frustrating, writing through it brings resolution. The work doesn’t even need to get read, but it is rewarding when it does. When we write about something new and exciting, a sense of satisfaction is often shared between the writer and reader. When confused or overwhelmed, writing sorts out our thoughts and feelings. When we are saddened, writing somehow reduces our anxiety.

Writing calls us to the computer when we are tired, but we comply. And when we are finished writing, we are content, but for only a short time.

 Writing is who we are.

  • Writing sure do get the boredom out of the writer. It has the advantage that thoughts are expressed out for sharing. Keeping it within oneself sometimes is unhealthy and does not serve any purpose. Many benefits exist in writing especially when done well. It builds confidence when others enjoy them. I believe most of us agree, right?

  • I couldn’t agree more. As a writer of mainly non-fiction, my work involves hours of research, but it’s the writing, a new slant on a well worn subject that I find appealing,. I’m a writer, it’s what I do and I’m not happy until I’ve reached my chosen target word-count.

  • Great post, great blog. We write to keep and to share, to release and to remember, to look for a friend or to be a friend. We write to create an identity – either to keep being who we are or to rebuild ourselves. Writing is imperative.
