Senior P.R.E.P. program coming to Laurens Walgreens

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Older adults are among the most vulnerable when an emergency impacts South Carolina. Therefore, taking precautions ahead of time can greatly benefit seniors in vulnerable situations.

The Senior P.R.E.P. program, created by the South Carolina Department on Aging, the South Carolina Emergency Management Division, and Walgreens, provides planning resources to help senior citizens across South Carolina with emergency planning. P.R.E.P. stands for Planning and Resources for Emergency Preparedness.

The event takes place on May 3 at Walgreens, 814 East Main Street, Laurens, SC 29360, from 9 to 11 a.m. Several partner agencies will discuss the importance of emergency planning and provide information. Weather radios and other emergency materials will be available for seniors and the community.

Seniors may encounter obstacles during an emergency, including limited mobility and medical needs. The Senior P.R.E.P. program promotes individual preparedness, awareness, and planning with family, friends, and caregivers ahead of an emergency.

Things to Consider:

• Plan with family, friends, and caregivers to assist with limitations.

• Include necessary assistive technology and medical supplies (i.e., oxygen tank) in your emergency kit.

• Have a plan or backup resource to power essential medical equipment.

• Check with any agency providing you services for special provisions in an emergency.

• Have clear and concise instructions for rescue personnel regarding special needs or equipment.

• Map out accessible emergency exits at home and work.

• Consider getting a medical alert system that can be used to call for help.

Everyone can take steps now to prepare for emergencies.
