SCICU, CHE to co-host SC Higher Education Day on April 6

Columbia, SC— The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education (CHE) and South Carolina Independent Colleges & Universities (SCICU) will partner to host a historic joint Higher Education Day April 6 at the S.C. State House.

Higher Education Day 2022 will include student participants from more than 30 public and independent colleges and universities across the state; participants will also be recognized in a session of the S.C. House of Representatives and attend a Governor’s Higher Education Day Proclamation Ceremony.

“Governor McMaster and South Carolina’s Legislature have generously supported meaningful increases to need-based financial aid over the past two years, and this support remains critical as our state continues to recover and move forward from the pandemic,” said Dr. Rusty Monhollon, CHE President and Executive Director. “Investing in the education of our students is not only a benefit to our workforce, but to the overall success and well-being of South Carolina.”

“In 2021, Governor McMaster announced significant increases in fiscal year 2021-2022 need-based aid for South Carolina resident students attending private and public colleges and universities,” said SCICU President and CEO Jeff Perez. “We are pleased the governor proposed, and the House budget includes, similar increases in need-based aid for fiscal year 2022-2023. It is fitting that Tuition Grants recipients at SCICU’s member colleges and universities join with needs-based recipients from public colleges and universities and present a unified message of thanks to the Governor and the General Assembly.”

The day comes as legislators consider a state budget that could maintain historic increases in need-based aid for South Carolina resident students.
