Greenwood, S.C. –
Greenwood County Economic Development Director James Bateman has been named a 2024 “Greenwood Under 40 Star” by Connect Young Professionals, the premier young professionals’ organization of the Greenwood SC Chamber of Commerce. James is one of eight young leaders to be honored this year. He will receive his award at a recognition dinner on September 19, 2024.

Since taking on the role of Economic Development Director in August 2020, James Bateman has demonstrated extraordinary leadership and commitment to advancing Greenwood County’s economic prospects. Tasked with establishing a first-class economic development program, James has built the department from the ground up, achieving remarkable success despite the challenges posed by a global pandemic and the intense competition for industrial recruitment. Under his strategic direction, Greenwood County has secured over $953 million in capital investments and created 742 new jobs, cementing its reputation as a competitive force in the world of industrial site location.

“James is a leader with vision, drive, and a deep commitment to Greenwood County’s future,” said County Council Chairman Chuck Moates. “His leadership has been instrumental in reshaping the economic landscape of Greenwood County and has propelled our community forward, creating jobs and opportunities that will benefit future generations. James has achieved so much in such a short time, but I believe his best work is still ahead.”

James’s leadership has not only driven economic growth but has also positioned Greenwood County as an attractive destination for business investments. His excellence in overseeing site readiness, leveraging grants, and fostering strong relationships with stakeholders has been instrumental in this success.

In addition to this latest recognition, James was named one of North America’s Top 50 Economic Developers of 2023 by Consultant Connect and played a pivotal role in securing a 2023 Corporate Investment & Community Impact (CiCi) Award for E.A. Sween Company and Greenwood County Economic Development.
