One of the more convenient routes to North West Greenwood for many is Cobb Road to Mathis Road. The only trouble is almost a year and a half ago, that route was closed due to necessary repairs to be made to the Mathis Road bridge located behind Bruster’s Ice Cream (see bridge circled below).
The wait for the bridge repair has been long, but the wait is almost over.
Assistant Greenwood County Engineer Rett Templeton explained that usually when a “Road Closed” sign goes up, most of the work, including analyses, design, and right of way, have already been completed. This closure was different. The road was closed first, and the work began soon afterwards.
Bids were sent out, and Carolina Bridge Company, out of Organgeburg, SC, was awarded the job. They are currently in the process of ordering the necessary materials. According to Templeton, Carolina Bridge Company anticipates starting construction on the Mathis Rd. Bridge within the next two to three weeks with expected completion early in 2020.
