Greenwood Sheriff: Arrest Made in Multi-state Burglaries

D. Kelly, Sheriff

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Arrest made in convenience store Burglaries spanning three states

The Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office has charged Christopher Taylor of Mauldin, SC with five counts of Burglary and is working with agencies across South Carolina, Georgia, and North Carolina to bring charges in more than 60 other break ins.

GREENWOOD, SC –  June 10, 2022 – Investigators with the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office have charged Christopher Taylor of Mauldin, SC with five counts of Burglary.  The investigation began last year when GCSO Investigators learned that several surrounding agencies were also having Burglaries at convenience stores that closely matched the ones occurring in Greenwood County.  GCSO investigators worked with agencies across the state to identify at least 19 jurisdictions within South Carolina, 6 in Georgia, and 3 in North Carolina that linked back to Taylor.   After Greenwood County’s most recent Burglary in May, responding Deputies were able to identify a suspect vehicle and Taylor as a suspect. During a failed Burglary attempt in Calhoun County, SC Taylor had to flee on foot and later reported his vehicle stolen in Richland County, SC.  Due to the information identifying Taylor and his vehicle to the previous Burglaries Deputies were able to determine that Taylor was attempting to file a false police report and was responsible for the attempted Burglary in Calhoun County that had just occurred.  The Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office is thankful for our working relationship with all of our neighboring agencies and the willingness to share information that helped lead to this arrest.  Greenwood County Sheriff Dennis Kelly said that he was, “Proud of the teamwork displayed between Uniform Patrol, the Crime Reduction Unit (CRU), and Investigators, not only helping the businesses in Greenwood County, but ultimately business owners throughout a Tri-Sate area.”

Greenwood County Investigators are asking other agencies that may have had a rash of ongoing convenience store burglaries, committed by the same unknown person, and specifically only targeted cash to reach out for more information.

Burglaries have been identified in each of the following law enforcement jurisdictions:

South Carolina : Greenwood County, Newberry County, Laurens County, Laurens City, McCormick County, McCormick City, Edgefield City, Johnston City, Anderson County, Clemson City, Central City, Oconee County, Greenville County, Greenville City, Pickens County, Greer City, Spartanburg County, Calhoun County, St. Matthews City.

Georgia: Lavonia City, Stephens County, Lincoln County, Habersham County, Franklin County, Columbia County

North Carolina: Polk County, Rutherford County, Henderson County
