Greenwood Museum Celebrates Black History Month:
The Museum of Greenwood is celebrating Black History Month with two exhibits that open this Thursday, February 6, with a free reception from 5:30-7:30 pm.
Greenwood native, Elnita Lipford Williams, has shared an eclectic collection of personal items ranging from cherished keepsakes, decorative items reflective of African Americans, a variety of dolls, to over fifty model cars, for the exhibit Memories & Mementos; Treasures from my life in Greenwood and beyond!
A second exhibit, The 521 All-Stars, is based on the 1998 book, The 521 All-Stars: A Championship Story of Baseball and Community. This exhibit depicts the story of an all-black championship baseball team that played on Highway 521 in Rembert, SC, that was part of a community baseball league. Remnants of the homemade ballpark still remain with scrap metal baselines and wooden bleachers where multiple generations of brothers, fathers, and sons played baseball. Several members of the 521 All-Stars will be at the opening reception.
Both exhibits will be on display through May 2. The Museum is located at 106 Main Street, next door to the Greenwood Community Theatre. Admission to The Museum is free.
