Greenwood County Parks and Recreation Celebrates Continued Growth in Youth Sports


Greenwood, S.C. – Youth sports participation in Greenwood County continues to soar. Greenwood County Parks and Recreation is pleased to announce an impressive surge in participation in its fall youth sports programs, recording an exciting 26% increase.
The star of this year’s success story is the football program, which has witnessed an astounding 88% increase in participation, expanding from 118 to 222 young athletes. The football program has doubled its number of teams and experienced significant growth in all areas of Greenwood County. Greenwood has expanded its football teams from three to six teams. Ninety-Six saw an increase from one to three football teams, while Ware Shoals increased from one to two teams.
“We are thrilled to see such a remarkable increase in our fall sports programs,” said Brad Cuttill, Greenwood County Parks and Recreation Director. “The significant growth in football and across other sports speaks volumes about the dedication of our County Council, community, and coaches to promote an active lifestyle through sports among our young athletes. Greenwood County Parks and Recreation takes immense pride in providing affordable and high-quality sporting opportunities for our youth, and this year’s numbers reaffirm the success of our collective efforts.”
The growth hasn’t been limited to football alone, as numerous sports have also experienced notable increases. Fall baseball saw a 20% rise, with 60 young athletes registering to participate. Volleyball experienced a 13% increase, attracting 99 participants eager to showcase their skills on the court. Cheerleading also witnessed a growth of 1%, boasting a total of 103 spirited participants.
Games for football and cheerleading started yesterday. While games for fall baseball and volleyball kick off tonight, beginning an exciting season filled with energy and sportsmanship.
Greenwood County Parks and Recreation provides a wide array of recreational activities for children ages 5-12, with age limits varying depending on the sport. These programs are designed to offer Greenwood County youth the opportunity to participate in organized and adult-supervised sports, where they can learn the fundamentals of each sport, practice good sportsmanship, and, most importantly, have fun through athletic competition.
