Greenwood Community Theater Presents The Great Gatsby

By Cat Baker,

Special to Greenwood Calendar

Walking into the Greenwood Community Theater, you are immediately welcomed by elegant vintage scenery. Stepping through the doors of the theater, you step back into time itself, but that is only the beginning. Guests take their seats, anxious to see the crowd-drawing performance of The Great Gatsby. The lights dim, the music plays, and the show begins – immediately drawing the audience into the nostalgia of the Roaring 20’s.

From the start, the show is all consuming, filled with enthusiasm from the actors paired with sensational stage effects. Lights dance around the backdrop, capturing the euphoria of a party fit for Jay Gatsby himself. Each member of the play was decorated with lavish dresses and fitted suits, embodying their roles with noticeable dignity and grace. It was nearly impossible not to notice how the crew paid close attention to seemingly minute details that truly made this performance stand out.

As one would expect from a classic performance of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the show was filled with dancing, laughing, romance, and, of course, heartbreak. Each scene brought with it a new twist. From the moment of Gatsby’s (Liam Roos) meeting his lost love, Daisy Buchanan (Kat Bates), for the first time in five years, to their heartbreaking downfall, all told through the lens of Nick Carraway (Noah Bunting), the show encompasses every heart wrenching moment from the classic novel as if they had lived it themselves.

Upon the show’s completion, and all the actors had taken their final bows, the audience enthusiastically applauded their performance in a prolonged ovation.

Bravo.
