obituary

Dr. Travis Brown Stevenson, Jr., 93 of Greenwood, husband of Elizabeth “Betty” Douglas Stevenson, passed away Monday, January 29, 2024, at Hospice and Palliative Care of the Piedmont.

Born in St. Matthews, S.C., he was the son of the late Travis Brown Stevenson, Sr., and Annie Prickett Stevenson. He graduated as Valedictorian from Walterboro High School in 1947, graduated as Valedictorian from Presbyterian College in 1951 with a BS degree, and graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina with honors in 1955 with a Doctor of Medicine degree. During his surgical residency he was called to active duty in the U.S. Navy. He was the Assistant Medical Officer on the USS Ranger.

Dr. Stevenson came to Greenwood in 1963 to practice General and Thoracic Surgery. He started a solo surgical practice, Greenwood Surgical Associates. Five years later he knew he needed help but waited another three years for Dr. Bill Holloway because he knew he was the right man. The practice continued to grow, and Dr. Bob Stewart was added as the third member. Through the years well qualified general and vascular surgeons were added to the practice. He was the Chief of Surgery and later the President of the Self Memorial Hospital Medical Staff. He was a past President of the S.C. Surgical Society. Dr. Stevenson practiced medicine until his retirement in 1995. He practiced at both Self Memorial Hospital and Brewer Hospital. Dr. Stevenson dedicated his life to the field of medicine and made significant contributions to the healthcare industry. His unwavering commitment to healing and his exceptional surgical skills earned him the utmost respect from his colleagues and patients alike.

He served on the District 50 School Board for nineteen years, was a member of the Greenwood Rotary Club and the Golden Kiwanis Club. Travis was an avid hunter. He enjoyed all kinds of hunting, but his favorite was turkey hunting. He was still hunting at 93 years old. He loved nothing better than being with his Happy Hunters Group out in the woods. He and Terry Lecroy chartered the Greenwood Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation October 24, 1986. Travis loved playing golf with his foursome dubbed “The Legends.” Travis, Harry Stephens, James “Ferq” Ferqueron and Jimmy McDonald comprised his group. They played with the seniors at Greenwood Country Club and enjoyed trips to play different courses at the beach and the mountains.

Travis was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He enjoyed snow skiing with his family in Colorado and skied until he was 72 years old. The family lake home on Lake Greenwood and the mountain house in Montreat, N.C. were both a source of great enjoyment with his family and friends. Travis was a faithful member of Rock Presbyterian Church. He served as an elder and was a member of the Seeker’s Sunday School Class. He was a charter member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder after being a member of First Presbyterian Church for 17 years where he served as a deacon and an elder.

Surviving in addition to his beloved wife of 71 years are his children, Travis Brown Stevenson, III of Black Mountain, NC, Elizabeth “Libba” Stevenson Deery and Ann Douglas Stevenson, both of Greenwood. Grandchildren, Sam Deery and his wife, Harmon, Ellen Cobb, Roland Cobb, Christine Cobb and her husband, Johan, Elijah Stevenson and Scout Stevenson. Great grandchildren; Chandler Deery and Gaia Ricaurte Cobb.

In addition to his parents, Travis was preceded in death by a special son-in-law, Samuel “Sammy” Joel Deery, IV.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 8, 2024, at Rock Presbyterian Church with Dr. Chris Leonard officiating.
