Beautification Group Seeks Lake Greenwood Clean Up Day Volunteers

Community volunteers, including adults and student groups, are encouraged to participate in the 12th annual Lake Greenwood Cleanup Day on Saturday, March 7, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. until 12 noon.

Annually, the event is coordinated by Keep Greenwood County Beautiful (KGCB), a citizen-led organization that engages individuals, neighborhoods, and businesses in creating a beautiful, clean and healthy environment.

Over the last two years, over 15,000 pounds of trash have been collected according to Donna Sightler, KGCB Vice Chair and event coordinator.  “Greenwood’s number one asset, our lake, is so important to the economic vitality of our community, and we must take care of it,” said Sightler.   Since 2009, KGCB has removed over 53,000 pounds of trash from the shorelines of Lake Greenwood.  Sightler is also the Greenwood County Public Works Director and is passionate about maintaining a clean environment.

Each year, over 200 volunteers give their time.  Volunteers who register bySunday, February 23 will receive a free t-shirt.  Youth, under the age of 18must be accompanied by an adult.  To sign up, register online at https://forms.gle/n5PZUTmWsN1W4moN9.

Volunteers are encouraged to work in pairs and teams and upon registering can choose to work at one of the following sites:

Clean up supplies and group assignments will be provided at each site by a Site Coordinator.

“Corporate supporters and numerous other entities collaborate with us,” said Sightler.  Greenwood County Lake Management, Greenwood County Public Works, Greenwood County Litter Prevention, Greenwood School District 50, and Palmetto Pride are annual supporters, just to name a few.

At the conclusion of the clean up, around 11:45 a.m., KGCB leaders will provide complimentary t-shirts to participants and offer complimentary refreshments, including hot dog plates, at the event headquarters, the Break on the Lake Restaurant, 300 Lake Greenwood Blvd., Greenwood, SC, 29649.  Break on the Lake will provide the hot dog plates and also offer a 10% discount to lake volunteers.
