Scam Alert

From the Greenwood Sheriff’s Office

Over the holidays the Greenwood Sheriff’s Office received several complaints where someone posing as a police or sheriff’s deputy attempted to intimidate citizens.

Persons unknown are asking Greenwood citizens to  send money or go to jail. It is not unusual for a Law Enforcement official to make contact with a citizen as a courtesy advising them of warrants or civil processes requiring their attention, however Law Enforcement agencies will NEVER ask for payment via any type of credit card, Green Dot etc.

If a citizen is contacted by someone posing as a local, state or federal police officer asking for payment in lieu of jail, this is a scam.!

Citizens are encouraged to contact  their local police agency should they receive a phone call of this nature, knowing this can be intimidating to anyone who is threatened to be placed in jail. Law Enforcement officers  can look into the incident and put the citizens at ease.

If you  have any questions about this, please feel free to contact me.
