New Andy Griffith Show Group: News from Mayberry

Howdy friends

First things first, here’s a link to the Andy Griffith Show theme song: theandygriffithshowtv

Today, I started: THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW Group on StumbleUpon.

What’s News

Andy Taylor (82): In 2008, Andy Griffith is still going strong. Andy appeared in country singer Brad Paisley’s music video “Waitin’ on a Woman” released on June 27, 2008. Also in fall 2008, Griffith will appear in the romantic comedy Play The Game alongside Doris Roberts, as a widowed grandfather re-entering the dating world after  60 years.

Opie Taylor (54) Ron Howard  has been busy directing such block busters as Splash, Parenthood, Cocoon, Apollo 13 (nominated for nine Academy Awards and winning two), A Beautiful Mind (for which he won the Academy Award for Best Director), Cinderella Man and The Da Vinci Code. He is also rumored to be directing a screen version of Arrested Development set for release in 2009.

Barney (July 21, 1924 – February 24, 2006) Don Knott’s hometown of Morgantown, West Virginia, has begun creation of a statue of the actor that will be placed in a memorial park along the river and Don Knotts Boulevard.

Coming Soon:

18th Annual MAYBERRY DAYS
Thursday – Sunday, September 25-28, 2008

from mayberrydays.org/

Mayberry Days is the annual festival of the Surry Arts Council that brings fans and friends from all over the county together in Andy Griffith’s hometown of Mount Airy, North Carolina. This year’s special events are described below, along with all the traditional events in the Mayberry Days Primer.

Special guests scheduled to attend this year include:

Betty Lynn – Thelma Lou Doug & Rodney Dillard – The Darling Boys
LeRoy McNees – Mayberry on Record James Best – Jim Lindsey
Jackie Joseph – “Sweet Romena” George Spence – Frank the Fiancé
Maggie Peterson – Charlene Darling as well as others

Mayberry Days is a festival for the whole family with activities and events for the fans to those who long for the days when life was simple and the Sheriff didn’t carry a gun. Enjoy a bottle of pop while playing checkers, relax to music from many local bands playing the same songs that Andy grew up with in Mount Airy and be sure to get your picture with the TV Land statue of Andy & Opie. There is so much to do during the festival, but there is always time to slow down and enjoy what Mayberry means to you.

 Personal Note

For me, the Andy Griffith Show is the ultimate television program.   Every episode is a gem, chock full of down home humor and   small town philosophies that have passed the test of time.  Peaceful living, lasting friendships, country courtships, and   family  values make up the magic that still draw fans in four decades later. The characters are more than actors we respect; they are  our friends. We all can identify with someone from Mayberry.  There’s Andy, Barney, Opie, Aunt Bee, Helen, Thelma Lou, Floyd, Otis, Gomer, Goober. There’s Ernest T. Bass, Howard, Mayor,  Claira, the Darlins, and Emmet. And there’s oh so many more .

  • I vaguely recall this TV show and I honestly can’t say that it made any lasting impression on my life. Perhaps that was because I was at an age where I found everything TV show that my parents like to be “hokey” and immediately left the room when it came on. Yet, I love where I live today and interestingly enough, peaceful living, lasting friendships, country courtships and family values are characteristic of this small community.

Best wishes to you and to all fans who become part of this group.

  • I was more of a Twilight Zone kind of guy but the Andy Griffith Show had its moments. Still, I think they could have ended the series with a bang by doing a final episode featuring a killing spree or something, you know, Otis sobers-up and, in his delirium, goes psycho on the town with a bazooka.

  • Ah…I love the Andy Griffith Show! Watched it when I was a kid and still watch it now when I can catch it on TVLAND. I agree with you, Rob, it is a timeless show. The humor and values and family interactions stand the test of time and are just as funny and heartwarming to me now as they were when the show first aired.

  • I used to watch Andy all the time Enjoyed it very much. Course there wasn’t much on cause we only got 2 channels LOL

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE the show I watch it all the time , when I need to lighten up , when I need to laugh, when I miss my childhood , it makes everything ok..Thanx for the invite

  • Hi Rob, My Dad got rid of our TV when I was very very little and started taking us all hiking, camping, canoing, etc. He said he wanted us living life…not watching life. BUT before he got rid of the TV I must have seen this show a 3 – 4 times and I NEVER forgot it. NEVER! I’ve gone almost my entire life without TV…But before I got rid of my VHS and DVD player I ran across some $1.00 DVDs that had 5 to 10 episodes of this program (in black and white). After all these years I remembered that program from only watching it 3 times. Needless to say I grabbed every single DVD and watched them all. I remember the first time I saw this show I went away wishing I lived there and knew those people. I wanted to step right into the TV and live their life with them. 🙂 🙂 There was something very magical and wholesome about it. They all had happy endings and the sun always shined and everyone was kind and funny and warm. There were no harsh realities of life. Just ease and joy and warmth. I was wery touched that you also enjoyed this show. 🙂 🙂

  • Hi Rob, Thanks for stopping by my site. I have always been a Andy Griffith fan.. I know most of what they will say before they say it I have watched them so much. I also own the full five years of the black and white episodes on DVD they are priceless.

  • I thought this was a group for the series “The New Andy Griffith Show,” which ran from January 1971 through May 1971. I was a big fan of that. Andy Sawyer and his family totally rocked the hizzy! Lee Meriwether was awesome! They should release episodes on DVD!
