Joan Lunden Selected As Self Regional Healthcare Foundation’s 2014 Madame Curie Society Speaker

(Greenwood, S.C., July 23, 2014) – Longtime Good Morning America (GMA) anchor, health advocate and television personality Joan Lunden has been selected as the guest speaker for the Self Regional Healthcare Foundation’s 2014 Madame Curie Society donor recognition event.

Lunden recently appeared on Good Morning America to announce that she has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer: “I heard the words that every woman fears and never wants to hear, ‘You have breast cancer,’ Lunden, 63, told GMA anchor Robin Roberts, also a breast cancer survivor. Lunden shared that she has already started chemotherapy and that her doctors are optimistic that she will make a full recovery.

In addition to her television persona, Lunden is a best-selling author and a health advocate, serving as a national spokesperson for organizations such as the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross.

“We’re very excited to welcome Joan Lunden to Greenwood as our Madame Curie speaker,” said Tonya Thomason, Fundraising Committee Chair for the Self Regional Foundation Board of Trustees. “Many of us enjoyed watching her over the years as the anchor of Good Morning America and can appreciate the balance she strikes between career and family life. She has spent the past several years traveling across the country, encouraging women to take charge of their health and well-being.”

The foundation’s mission of improving healthcare in the Lakelands supports healthcare technology investments at Self Regional, including the ICT BrainSuite, the Cancer Center’s expanded facility which opened in 2011, and programs and services including the Self Regional Health Express mobile outreach which will reach underserved communities and individuals.

Donors who give $2,000 or more annually or include the Foundation in their bequests will be invited to the Madame Curie Society recognition dinner as a way to thank them for their support.
