Brian O’Reilly Memorial Veteran’s Day Tennis tournament
November 11, 2016 @ 8:00 am - November 13, 2016 @ 5:00 pm
Good news for Greenwood tennis enthusiasts, a new USTA (United States Tennis Association) sanctioned tournament event will be held at The Links at Stoney Point on Lake Greenwood this November. Tournament Director and Stoney Point tennis pro, Lori Flick announced the Brian O’Reilly Memorial Veteran’s Day Tennis tournament will take place over Veteran’s Day weekend this year, Nov 11-13.
“I love tennis, and always wanted there to be an adult tennis tournament in Greenwood. Most tennis players in Greenwood have to travel to Greenville and Lexington or farther to play in tournaments. It’s nice to go to those places, but I would like some of those players from those towns, to come to my town to play”, said Flick.
“Once I certified as a USTA teaching professional, and became the Pro at Stoney Point, I decided it was a great opportunity to hold a sanctioned event. We have had several Round Robin events for locals, but a sanctioned event is a bigger deal. A player receives points towards their USTA tennis rankings, and sanctioned events draw more players from different areas”, said Flick. There are specific rules to follow to host a sanctioned tournament. For instance, there will be a USTA referee on site and an USTA Official to preside over the courts.
Greenwood hosts two junior USTA sanctioned tournaments yearly at the Greenwood Country club, but has not had a sanctioned adult tournament in years. The tournament has been named after Brian O’Reilly, Marine veteran of WWII and former Gatewood Racket club employee, who passed away last January. “Brian was like a grandfather figure to me and well loved by family and everyone at Gatewood. He was a veteran and a fine man. He supported both me and my sister in high school tennis, and encouraged me all through college and afterwards. He taught me how to string tennis rackets.” It is only fitting he have my first sanctioned tennis tournament named after him and to have it honor a man and men like him.
To honor veterans during the event, a wall of honor will be on display with photos of tournament participants that are veterans’ as well as military family members of participants. The doubles tournament will take place over the course of three days, and there will be awards for champions and finalists. While the event details are still be planned, the event may also include music from local musicians and other amenities for the players and those who come to watch.
The tournament committee which consists of Director Lori Flick, Randy and Donna Flick, and Jeannie and Scott Kwarsick, are hoping to find sponsors to help support the event in hopes it will be come and annual Veteran’s Day charity event. “For now, we are hoping to break even with the costs, but at the same time find more ways to honor any military veteran tennis players that participate. We want to make this first tournament one of the nicest tennis tournaments in the state. We want the all the players to have fun, and want to come back year after year to this tournament, and we want Brian to be proud of it”, said Randy Flick, committee member.
To register, the tournament can be found on USTA website tennis link, number SCL4-700139816.
